How can an enterprise improve social, economic and environmental performance?

This section gives you examples of sustainable enterprises and access to tools and tips to improve sustainability of tourism enterprises as well as other enterprises. It also presents knowledge about World Heritage and protected nature areas in the Wadden Sea, Geirangerfjord and The Wash and North Norfolk. Protection is one way to preserve environmental values.

Questions for reflection and discussion

All resources below are potentially relevant for the questions. To find particular resources, a tips is to use the search function with some of the keywords in the question.

 What is a sustainable business model? What is not? (Tips: Combine examples of sustainable enterprises and discuss some of them up against the tools related to business models.)

 What are the similartities and differences of the different tools in the CapSEM model? Google also diverse tools to know more. (Tips: Use the figure in the Capsem – model as a starting point.)

 Pick a firm in the example publications or use your own firm: Which of the tools in the CapSEM model may be relevant to use in the business to improve sustainability? (Tips: Use the figure in the Capsem model)

 Pick a firm in the example publications or use your own firm: In what way may the firm’s business model be characterized as sustainable? In what way not? Why? (Tips: Use the sustainable business model canvas of Joyce and Paquin to analyse the firms strengths and weaknesses related to sustainability)

 Use the same firm as in question 4: Use the RESTART framework as a tool to help improve sustainability of the business model analyzed in the question above.

 How may World Heritage and protection of nature areas influence sustainable development of the same nature areas and the surrounding communities? Assess both positive and negative social, economic and environmental impacts. (Tips: First have a look at the resources on the protected areas in The Wash and North Norfolk, Wadden Sea and Geirangerfjord)
