Sustainability and sustainable development have become terms commonly used in tourism development. However, the terms remain ambiguous and not clearly defined when used in tourism planning and research. This article critically reflects on the different perspectives and emphasizes “… the need to re-frame i.e., rescale and decentralize tourism in policy frameworks and practices aiming towards sustainability” (Saarinen 2013).
