The Wadden Sea is situated in one of the most densely populated corners of the world and is shared by three countries. As a consequence there are a lot of different interests that interact and sometimes conflict in the Wadden region. The region is a sanctuary for biodiversity, home to tens of thousands of people, and its natural characteristics offer unique recreational opportunities. Furthermore, the region is a hotbed for economic activities, harbouring busy seaports, natural gas reserves and providing rich fishing grounds.
